Get Snappy 12: London and the People’s Vote march

Get Snappy 12: London and the People’s Vote march

Earlier this week, I got some great photos from my usual haunt of the riverfront by Tower Bridge. I always make myself deviate through there on my cycle home if the light is good, and this week I was rewarded handsomely for that. I love the picture of the city, where the light is yellow, pink and a gentle green. It was generally a lovely, warm evening, with people milling around by the water and some beautiful scenes. So much…

Get Snappy 11: London

Get Snappy 11: London

Getting creative with a camera in your day-to-day life is a challenge. Even in a city like London, it’s hard to make the mundane moments the subject of a striking picture. But not only is Get Snappy as good a motivation as any to try, it also pushes me to go and actually do the things on my London ‘to-do’ list. I’d been planning to go Columbia Road flower market for months but the necessary combination of a free Sunday…

Get Snappy 10: London

Get Snappy 10: London

This week contained basically my two favourite ‘public’ days: Pancake Day and International Women’s Day. I have come to treasure Pancake Day (should this be capitalised? It does feel like an occasion that deserves capital letters) as a sacred opportunity to eat pancakes for dinner (and breakfast and lunch if you want to be truly inspirational) without anyone questioning your nutritional choices. The best pancake topping is Nutella, strawberries and whipped cream. I will take no questions on this matter….

Get Snappy 9: London and Cornwall

Get Snappy 9: London and Cornwall

The glorious sun we were treated to last week sadly came to an end. We had a few more blissful sunny days (I am a sun worshipper through and through) before the heat broke and the rain arrived. The one good thing that came out of our tragic return to drizzle and clouds were some astonishingly moody views over the centre of London that made for some great pictures. I was pleased that I’d taken some Get Snappy contenders so…

Tregardock beach, 2018

Tregardock beach, 2018

I read a lot of travel blogs, and one thing you come to realise is that every blogger has certain places they love, that they return to over and over and over again. One of those places for me is Tregardock beach. If you’ve read a few posts on this blog, you may have come across some glorious Tregardock photos. This beach is gorgeous. I took a host of photos at Tregardock last year, as I managed to visit five…

Why you should cycle in London

Why you should cycle in London

When people find out I cycle in London, I get a lot of comments, primarily to the tune of, “that would be so scary. I could never do that.” I’m sorry to burst your bubble – but you’re wrong. I believe in you. You could do it, if you wanted to, with a few pieces of advice and a gentle nudge in the right direction. Here is that nudge, and some advice, because I only thing I like more than…

Get Snappy 8: London & Oxford

Get Snappy 8: London & Oxford

This has been an unexpectedly good week for photography. The days are getting longer, which means that the sunset now coincides pretty well with when I leave work and that I get all the good light on my cycle home. It has been so nice taking a slightly more meandering route home this week, criss-crossing the bridges and setting up along to river to catch the amazing light. Guys, the light this week has been fantastic! I wrote in last…

How much does it cost to ski in Bansko, Bulgaria?

How much does it cost to ski in Bansko, Bulgaria?

One of the main reasons we chose to ski in Bansko, Bulgaria – rather than somewhere further west in Europe – was the price. Going skiing is always going to be more expensive than taking a similar trip sans winter sports – you have to buy a lift pass, and, unless you own your own gear (which carries its own transport costs), hire gear and perhaps book a few lessons to get your skills up to scratch. All of this…

What to do in Sofia

What to do in Sofia

So far, I have really struggled to write “what to do in X” posts. Sure, I have done plenty of things on my trips – visited museums, tried restaurants, beach-hopped – but writing about them in listicle format is always a challenge for me. I feel I am at my best when I’m writing about a more specific subject. I mean, I wrote over a thousand words about a single cathedral in Prague. I just posted another thousand-word blog about…

The Museum of Socialist Art, Sofia, Bulgaria

The Museum of Socialist Art, Sofia, Bulgaria

After spending a wonderful week being active in the mountains in Bansko, we headed to Sofia to spend our last couple of days in Bulgaria in the capital. While getting out into nature is my favourite thing to do, as I discussed in last week’s Get Snappy, I do feel it’s important to engage with the history and culture of the places you visit. Making sure to eat local food is part of that, but nothing can replace heading to…
