Getting creative with a camera in your day-to-day life is a challenge. Even in a city like London, it’s hard to make the mundane moments the subject of a striking picture. But not only is Get Snappy as good a motivation as any to try, it also pushes me to go and actually do the things on my London ‘to-do’ list. I’d been planning to go Columbia Road flower market for months but the necessary combination of a free Sunday morning in London when the weather was actually nice hadn’t come up for weeks and weeks. I’m so glad we got out of bed and got moving this morning. In fact, we nailed the timing today. We got up early and made it to the flower market, the Saatchi gallery, a few shops for some rage shopping (don’t ask) and into a bakery we wandered past for the kind of fancy éclairs that would look far more at home in Paris than in London (though the shop also had an Instagram wall that I’d seen be the subject of at least two pop culture articles and which offended me greatly).
Then we made it home by 3pm to spend the rest of Sunday chilling. It is so rare that I nail the timing like that on the weekends; usually I screw up my energy levels and end up chronically in need of a nap by mid-afternoon. This was a pretty perfect London Sunday.
Lots of the photos this week are from today, from the market to the bakery to the gallery’s ‘Kaleidoscope’ exhibition. There’s also a couple from a nice pre-sunset glow I glimpsed from the back door earlier this week. I especially like the picture of the moon.
Aside from photography, I thought a lot about writing this week and made some changes to the blog. Brexit continued to be a stressful disaster. I managed to see a lot of my friends, which is always the sweetest, and I thought too much about which flavours of ice cream I’m going to buy next week after I have a wisdom tooth removed.
All in all, it has been another solid but subdued week pottering around in London. While I am itching to head off and see somewhere new, I’m enjoying having a bit more money to spend doing fun things in London and being more available for last minute weekend plans. Next week, I’m having minor oral surgery, my oldest friend returns from a long trip to New Zealand and I’m planning to head to the Brexit march with a swollen and bruised face. I imagine this collection of activities will yield another eclectic set of images.
Onto this week’s photos. Which one is your favourite?
